Chapter VI: Da Capo

«That's the whole story» Baudolino said to Niketas. « Towards the end of the month of June of the year of our Lord 1190, we set out, twelve of us, like the Magi, even if less virtuous than they, to reach finally the land of Prester John»

Umberto Eco, Baudolino

Anno Domini 1533

It was a cold winter morning, when Hubert Villon got to the church in Pouilly. He had recently been appointed as the new priest, after the untimely passing of his predecessor. Nobody had believed that he would amount to much, except of course his saintly mother. Even his brothers, whom he took care of for a few years, did not have a high opinion of him. But Hubert always knew in his heart that he was part of God's special plan.

As Hubert walked up from the crypt, he found an engraving on the archway that he had never seen before. He was aghast when he read the message.

« Hubert Villon, je t'ordonnes de brûler cette église pour la protéger des diables de Genève »

« Hubert Villon, I command you to burn down this church to protect it from the devils of Geneva »

Hubert was well aware of the blasphemous teachings of John Calvin in Geneva that were poisoning many souls. Unfortunately, his teachings had spread to Pouilly as well. Hubert had forcibly spoken out against these heresies many times.

There were rumors that the Bernese might team up with Geneva to launch another invasion soon. There was no choice, he had to save God's church from these heretics.
